Our 7-hour journey riding the trains from Florence to Porto Maurizo was worth every minute because we’ve finally arrived in Villa Viani, the birthplace of my grandparents, and the home of our family’s oldest-living relatives. Siblings Roselina and Piero are the children of my late grandfather’s brother, Pio Viani, and continue to live in rural Villa Viani tending the olive trees, grapes, and expansive gardens.

Spoleto, Montefalco, Todi, and some Mummies
We’ve recovered from the freak snow storm in Norcia (actually, it was a hoot and we celebrated by having a ricotta tort and caffè at the conclusion of our trek). We’re now in Spoleto, relaxing at the Hotel Charleston, and preparing for our final swing through Viterbo, Florence, and then on to Villa Viani for a week with the family.
Spoleto is a great town, and we’re enjoying its many offerings with Susan and John.

June 1 – It Snowed on Us!
It’s hard to believe we’re in the 5th day of our HF hiking adventure in Norcia. And what an adventure it’s been. Sure, we were prepared by our leaders Peter and Graham to dress warmly. They even suggested wooly caps and gloves, and we obliged. But taking our lunch break in a snowstorm at about 1,700 meters was more than any of us could possibly have expected.
