When I [Charlotte Stahl] was six years old, my mother [Anna] married again, my stepfather, "George Tanner", a fine man. They were very happy in the marriage. At the time he was 53 years of age and she 38. In 1902, they moved to Montana. At that time there was a great influx of immigrants from Norway. Sweden, Russia, and Denmark. These people came over because of the offer of free land. My step-father hoped to capitalize on this situation which he did very successfully as he furnished, lumber, hardware, food and assistance in other ways. He was also interested in the banks(?) of the community. He also had runners(?) in four towns. 19
