Joseph Louis Viani Jr. was born on March 4, 1945, at Queen of Angels hospital in downtown Los Angeles. His family was residing on Normandy Street at the time, living in the downstairs unit of a duplex. Upstairs lived Bob and Mary Alice Krock, long-time family friends. At his baptism, his godfather, Angelo Pipolo, gave him the name Nicola, that was the name of his father. From then on, “little Joe” was called Nicky. At some point in his early adult life, Nick Viani officially dropped the name Louis.

His mother relates that reawakening from the anesthesia, the pediatrician announced the child was a seven-pound boy. Natalie reportedly said, "Life can be beautiful.”

The family remained in Los Angeles for a couple more years, and in 1949, Joseph L. Viani took a job managing a bowling alley in Palm Springs. Joe had just completed his Associate Arts degree at L.A. City College, and he was somewhat disillusioned with playground work with the city schools. There they remained for two years, and Nick was involved in a play group while his sister, Julianne, attended Kindergarten and first grades.

The hours and pressure of managing a bowling alley were taxing, and three years later they returned to the Los Angeles area. Natalie found employment at her brother-in-law's pharmacy, and the Vianis lived with Olga and Angelo Pipolo in their custom house on Journey's End Drive in La Canada. They remained there for some time, until locating and renting a small house on Kirkby Road in Glendale.

In 1953, while visiting friends in La Canada, Joe and Natalie were impressed by a nearby half-acre lot. They walked the property, and spoke to the owner (Curtis Barnes) who was working in the yard next door. Joe asked if the lot was for sale, and the owner figured a price of $4,000 seemed fair, so the Vianis bought it on the spot. A few months later, they received an offer of $8,000, but were already designing a home and refused it.

They moved into their custom house at 4714 Lasheart Drive in March, 1953, and Nick celebrated his 8th birthday there. That same year Natalie's sister, Olga, lost her husband Angelo Pipolo to a blood clot. She was unable to live alone due to the stress, and moved into the Viani house, remaining there for a couple years.
