To reach this jewel, we entered New Mexico along Hwy. 10 after leaving Phil’s. Shortly after crossing the border, we headed south on NM80 to Rodeo and headed west to Portal. This truly is a portal to some of the loveliest country of this trip. We camped at Sunny Flat and rode our bikes up the south fork of Cave Creek and were rewarded by some remarkable events, not the least being the sunsets reflected off the steep peaks surrounding our campground.
