The home is currently owned by Fred Schroeder. This house is one of the oldest homes in Valley City and is known as the "Padden House." Later they lived in a house, now torn down, which was located just across the street east of the Congregational Church.and just south across the street from the High School campus.

Husband (Axel Chilberg) died when daughter Hilda was young. Ellen remarried (about 1897) to Fred Rossing when "Hilda was 18"

CHILBERG FAMILY: Ellen (Elna Dorothea) Chilberg/Rossing
By Donna Nix

Ellen Chilberg (Elna Dorothea) married Anders Fredric Rossing in 1894, in Valley City, ND. Fred and Ellen met at the boarding house Ellen was running. Three daughters were born in Valley City: Jessolin, Lillian and Winnifred. In 1905 the Rossings and their three daughters plus Grace and Edna Chilberg came to the Pettibone area and filed on a homestead about six miles south of where Pettibone now is located--the SE of Section 2 - 141 - 70. (Pettibone was organized as a town July 5, 1910, and the main track of the Northern Pacific Railroad went through on September 3, the same year. Previous to 1910 the nearest trading points and railroad towns were Medina and Tappen.) Edna and the three younger children attended the DeKrey School in Malcolm (now Weiser) Township.

Mrs. Ellen (Elna Dorothea) Rossing had leukemia and passed away in 1911. The family had had many hardships and Fred was not an experienced farmer, so not long after the mother died, the family moved into Pettibone where Fred went back to his chosen work, that of an interior decorator.

Hilda and Edith were already married when their mother moved to Kidder County. Hilda was married in 1898 and Edith earlier than that and both families lived in Jamestown. Bernice was working for the telephone company there and lived with Hilda and Walter Hoster. Grace and Edna later went to Jamestown and lived with their sister, Edith, while working for the telephone company. Edna was quite young at this time and her mother felt very bad about her leaving home. Grace didn't work long in Jamestown because she married Will Nelson in 1907. Grace said that when she was getting pay checks she loved to buy things for her mother and her younger sisters but her mother cautioned her to save her money and start buying things for herself, too.
